Anniyah
Feminine
Anniyah puts an English name inside an Arabic-looking frame. The core is Ann or Annie; the -iyah ending is a genuine Arabic suffix, the feminine form of the adjectival -iyy that produces words like ʿarabiyyah and hurriyyah. In American naming that suffix has come loose from Arabic entirely and become an available ending for anything.

Our story of Anniyah
The -iyah ending entered general American naming through Aaliyah, which was a genuine Arabic name and a very large one after 1994. What happened next is what happens to any suffix that becomes visible: it detached. Within a decade -iyah was being attached to stems that had nothing to do with Arabic — Janiyah, Amiyah, Zaniyah, Anniyah — and the ending was doing the whole job of the name, supplying three syllables of familiar rhythm to any opening consonant. Anniyah, peaking in 2009, uses the plainest possible stem: Ann, the shortest standard English girls' name there is. The result is a name where the recognizable part is a hundred years old and the fashionable part is fifteen, which is a fairly exact description of how most modern coinages are built.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Ann is Hebrew Hannah, "grace" or "favor", and that is settled for Ann itself. But Anniyah is not a form of Ann in any tradition, and -iyah is not a diminutive — in Arabic it makes an adjective feminine and requires a real stem to attach to. Attached to an English name it makes no word. There are Arabic names in this shape, such as ʿAliyah and Rabiʿah, but Anniyah is not one of them.

Pronouncing Anniyah
ah-NEE-yuh
Three syllables, stress in the middle, and the ya is a single glide rather than two separate vowels. Some speakers say AN-ee-yuh with the stress at the front, which pulls it towards Annie.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Chivon test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Anniyah's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Chivon climbed just as high around 1980, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Chivon's path sketches the road Anniyah is walking now.
Anniyah sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Annie is a ready-made short form with a century of ordinary use behind it.
- The rhythm matches Aaliyah, Amaya and Maliyah, so it never needs explaining aloud.
- It joins a very familiar first syllable to a modern ending, which gives it two registers.
- Anniyah, Aniyah, Anaya and Aniya are all common and will all be guessed.
- The Arabic-looking ending does not carry an Arabic meaning here.
- The single or double n is a coin flip on every form.
