This is not a form of Anne. Annis and Annice are medieval English forms of Agnes — the g dropped out in speech, the s softened, and the result was the ordinary way the name was said in England for several centuries. The resemblance to Anne is a coincidence that has fooled everybody since.

Where it comes from

The story of Annice

The saint's eve had a folk custom attached to it that lasted for centuries. A girl who went to bed fasting on the night before the feast, without looking behind her, was supposed to dream of the man she would marry — and there were elaborate variations involving pins, rosemary and eating a salted egg. It appears in almanacs, in collections of superstitions and eventually in a very long poem by Keats built entirely around the belief. Whether anybody ever really did it is another matter; what is documented is that a great many people wrote it down.

Meaning

chaste, holy

From a Greek adjective meaning pure or holy. The name has nothing to do with Anne, which is Hebrew and means grace, and the two have been confused for so long that most sources now list this under the wrong parent.

Annice sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1959, with 36 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Annice sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine medieval English form rather than a modern respelling.
  • The meaning is clear and belongs to a very well-attested name.
  • It is short and gives no trouble at all.
What to consider
  • It will be read as a form of Anne, which it is not.
  • Annis and Anice both appear and the spelling gets queried.
  • The generation that used it is now very old.
