Where it comes from

The story of Annett

The mother of Mary is named only in a book that never got into the Bible. Everything anyone knows about Anne comes from a second-century text usually called the Protoevangelium of James: her childlessness, her husband Joachim, the angel, the birth, the child presented at the temple. The church declined to treat the book as scripture and then celebrated almost everything in it anyway, so a figure with no biblical existence acquired feast days, patronages, cathedrals and a place in the standard iconography of the Virgin's childhood. Whole cycles of medieval painting illustrate a text that was officially not there.

Meaning

Grace

The Hebrew Hannah, favor or grace, through the Latin Anna and the French diminutive ending. The diminutive was originally affectionate rather than formal and became a name in its own right, which is the usual career of an ending like this one.

Two syllables with the stress at the back. German puts more weight on the first than English does, so the name sounds noticeably flatter in its home country.

Annett sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1960, with 40 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Annett sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a standard German spelling rather than an American variant.
  • Two short forms in two quite different registers.
  • Final stress gives the name a clean finish and makes it carry.
What to consider
  • Annette is far commoner in America and will be written by anyone taking dictation.
  • The missing e reads as an error rather than a choice.
  • It is firmly dated to the middle of the twentieth century in American use.
