Where it comes from

Our story of Annessa

Annals are year-books. The Latin annus, a year, gave annales, the yearly records kept by Roman priests and later by monasteries, and the word came into English for any chronological account. The same root gives annual, anniversary, biennial and perennial — which literally means through the years and is why a perennial plant is one that does not need replanting. Superannuated is the best of them: it means beyond the years, past the age limit, and English used it for people forced to retire and then, rather brutally, for anything obsolete. Annuity is the same word attached to money. The Latin noun has not produced a word for a year in English itself — that is Germanic — so an entire vocabulary about time is built on a root the language does not use for the thing itself.

The front is Anne, from the Hebrew Hannah, meaning favor or grace. The ending came off Vanessa and carries nothing. Nothing records what a family meant by joining them, and the compound has no source of its own.

Fashion outlook

Annessa sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves detach as short forms and each is a standing name.
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the easiest rhythm English offers.
  • The spelling is phonetic and survives being heard once.
What to consider
  • Anessa, Annissa and Vanessa will all be written for it.
  • The ending places the name in a particular stretch of American fashion.
  • Only the front half has a documented meaning.
