The story of Anneke
She was a Dutch woman who received a land grant in New Amsterdam, and her heirs sold most of it — but not, they later argued, all of it, and not properly. The claim passed down through generations, attracted lawyers who charged for hope, and became a genuine American folk obsession: at its height thousands of people believed themselves entitled to a share of lower Manhattan. Courts dismissed it repeatedly. The case is now taught as an example of how a legal claim can outlive every fact it depended on.
Meaning
little Anna
The ending is the Dutch diminutive, which attaches to almost any name and is the equivalent of the English -ie with rather more dignity. Anna is Hebrew and means favor or grace. Dutch uses the diminutive so freely that it can be applied to objects, weather and abstractions, and a name with it is affectionate rather than childish.
