Where it comes from

Our story of Annamay

Ovid, writing a poem explaining the Roman calendar, gets to May and offers three competing explanations without deciding between them: that it is named for the goddess Maia, that it honors the elders, the maiores, or that it comes from a word for growth. Maia herself is a shadowy figure even in Roman religion, with a festival, an old priest attached to her, and almost no stories. Modern scholarship has not improved much on Ovid's shrug. So one of the twelve months of the western calendar is named after a goddess whose own people could not tell you what she did, which is a good reminder of how much gets carried forward simply because nobody stopped.

The first half is a well-documented name from Hebrew through Greek. The second may be the month, the flowering hawthorn, or a short form of Mary, and the record does not choose.

Fashion outlook

Annamay sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both halves are entirely familiar, so it is never a puzzle to say.
  • Anna and May are both available as short forms and both are established names.
  • It names two people at once, which is what double names are for.
What to consider
  • Written solid it will be split, hyphenated and reordered by forms for life.
  • It reads as a name of a much older American generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
  • No origin is documented for the compound, so the meaning question belongs to each half separately.
