Where it comes from

The story of Annah

Hannah is the mother of Samuel in the Hebrew Bible, and her prayer at Shiloh is one of the great passages of the book; Anna is the prophetess in the temple in Luke, and the tradition also names Mary's mother Anna. Both forms spread across Europe, Anna in the Catholic and Orthodox south and east and Hannah in Protestant England after the Reformation, which is why a family's preference between them often tracks a denomination. The nineteenth-century American habit of adding a final h to women's names, which gave Sarah, Deborah and Rebekah their look, produced Annah as well; its best year on file is 1888.

Meaning

grace, favor

Hebrew Hannah, from a root meaning to be gracious or to show favor. Greek could not begin a word with an h in the way Hebrew does and rendered it Anna, which Latin and thence most of Europe inherited. The two forms are one name. The final h of this spelling is an English decorative marker and has no Hebrew warrant.

Annah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2001, with 68 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Annah went to 16 girls in 2025, but Anna and Ana are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 3,813, which makes it the 68th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,770 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 422 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Annah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A settled Hebrew meaning that can be given in one word.
  • Annie, Nan and Anya are three short forms in three traditions.
  • One of the oldest and most portable women's names in Europe.
What to consider
  • Anna and Hannah are both standard and will be written instead.
  • The added h has no historical basis at the end of the word.
  • It reads as a nineteenth-century American spelling, because that is its period.
