Anglea
Feminine · “messenger”
Anglea is Angela with two letters swapped, and the swap lands the name on a word about England. The Angles were one of three peoples who crossed to Britain after Rome withdrew, and they were not the largest of the three; the country is nevertheless named after them, and the language is too, and nobody has ever satisfactorily explained why.

The story of Anglea
Bede lists three peoples: Angles, Saxons and Jutes, with the Angles coming from what is now the German-Danish border and the Saxons from further south. By every measure available the Saxons were more numerous and left more of a mark on the map: Essex, Sussex, Wessex and Middlesex are all named for them, and there is no equivalent set of Angle counties. And yet the country is England and the language is English, both built on the smaller name. The best guess is that Latin writers used the Angle name as a general term early and it stuck through the church, which had reason to standardize. It is a good reminder that the names things end up with are often decided by whoever was writing rather than by whoever was there.
Meaning
messenger
The name being respelled comes from the Greek word for a messenger and the reading is settled. The transposed letters do not change that; they change what the written name looks like it belongs to, which is a real effect and not a semantic one. The tribal name it now resembles is unrelated and probably comes from a word about a hook or an angle of land.
How the name formed
- A Greek word for a messenger
- Angela across the Christian world
- Two letters transposed in American records
- Landing on the word behind England

Three syllables, stress on the first, said exactly as Angela. The transposed letters change nothing audible, which is why the spelling could survive being written and read without correction for decades.
