Where it comes from

The story of Angla

The Venerable Bede, writing in Northumbria in the eighth century, tells how Gregory, before he became pope, saw fair-haired boys offered for sale in the market at Rome. Told they were Angles, he answered that the name suited them, for they had the faces of angels; later tellings shortened it to 'not Angles but angels'. Angla sits one letter from each word in that pun: change its last letter and it is Angle, restore a vowel and it is Angela. The name itself is simply Angela with its middle vowel dropped, and nothing records its first use.

Meaning

angel, messenger (as Angela)

Angla is a short spelling of Angela, the feminine of the Latin Angelus, from the Greek angelos, 'messenger'. The record keeps no separate meaning for the shortened form.

Meant to be said as a two-syllable Angela. English spelling softens a g only before e, i or y, so a cold reader may say ANG-gluh, as in angle.

Fashion outlook

Angla sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Rests on Angela, a name with a long record in English and across Europe.
  • Compact: two syllables instead of three.
  • Takes Angie, a short form everyone already knows.
What to consider
  • Most readers will take it for a misspelling of Angela and add the missing e back. The name will need spelling for life.
  • Without that e the g looks hard, and many will say ANG-gluh, like angle or Anglo, until corrected. A word the first time is usually enough.
