The story of Angelis
The Missa de Angelis, the 'Mass of the Angels', is the eighth of the chant Masses gathered in the Kyriale, the Catholic book of sung Mass settings, and one of the most widely sung of them all. The same Latin form survives in Italian family names: De Angelis, De Amicis and De Sanctis all keep a Latin plural ending in -is, a trace of the Latin in which Italian records were once kept. As a first name, Angelis carries that Latin shape into American use, where it is given almost entirely to girls.
Meaning
angels (from Latin angelus)
In Latin, angelis is the plural of angelus, 'angel', in the case used after de, 'of, about, from'. Angelus itself comes from the Greek angelos, 'messenger'. As a given name, Angelis also sits beside the Spanish Ángeles, from the Marian title Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles, and beside Angela and Angel.

Fashion outlook
Angelis sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Its letters are a real Latin word with a clear meaning, angels.
- Reads naturally in English, in Spanish and in church Latin.
- Angie and Angel are ready-made short forms.
- People will expect Angela or Angel and may correct the ending; the spelling will need saying aloud.
- The pronunciation shifts between English and Spanish readings, and a family will want to settle on one.
- A few boys are given the spelling, but almost every Angelis is a girl, so a boy will usually be taken for one on paper.
