Angelee
Feminine · “messenger”
Before it meant a winged being, angelos meant a messenger — an ordinary Greek word for someone carrying news, used of runners and heralds long before it was used of anything supernatural. The translators of the Hebrew Bible borrowed it, and the word acquired wings. Angelee is the American version of the name that came out of all that, with an ending that fixes the final vowel.

The story of Angelee
Angela and Angelina spread through Catholic Europe from the Middle Ages, and Italy in particular produced a large family of names on the root. The English-speaking world took Angela in the twentieth century and then went to work on it: Angelia, Angelie, Angelee, Angeline. What the -ee ending contributes is certainty — the final vowel of Angelie or Angeli could be read several ways, and the doubled e can only be read one. American records carry this spelling from the early twentieth century, though it is strongest much later and particularly in Texas.
Meaning
messenger
From the Greek angelos, a messenger. Its use for divine messengers comes from the Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures, where it renders a Hebrew word that also simply means messenger. The English word angel and this name are the same word, and the wings are a later addition.

The Clea test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Angelee's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Clea climbed just as high around 1936, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Clea's path sketches the road Angelee is walking now.
Angelee sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The -ee ending removes any doubt about the final vowel, which the other spellings leave open.
- Angie and Angel are both available and are among the most established short forms in American naming.
- The meaning is a single concrete word with a good story about how it changed.
- Three syllables of soft consonants sit well after almost any surname.
- Angela, Angelie and Angeli all sit nearby, so the spelling has to be dictated.
- The stress placement is not settled, and a girl will hear her name both ways.
- The word it is built on carries a heavy set of associations that a child does not choose.
