Where it comes from
From a Greek word for a messenger to Angelea
The story of Angelea
Jimmie Angel was an American aviator flying prospectors around the tepuis of southern Venezuela when he saw the falls in the 1930s. He came back to land on the summit and the wheels sank into the boggy top; he and three companions walked out over eleven days. The plane stayed on the mountain until the 1970s. The falls themselves drop nearly a kilometre, so far that in the dry season the water becomes mist before it reaches the bottom, and the local Pemon people had of course known about them for a very long time.
Meaning
messenger
Angela comes from the Greek word for a messenger, which acquired its heavenly sense only after the Bible was translated into Greek and needed a word for the beings who carry messages from God. This spelling adds an e before the final a, which produces a fourth syllable for some readers and nothing at all for others, and the record carries both readings.
