The classical Arabic ode opens, by convention, with the poet halting at an abandoned campsite and weeping over the traces of it — and he does not do this alone. He addresses two companions, in the dual form the language keeps for exactly two people, and asks them to stop with him. The most famous poem in the tradition begins that way, and so do a great many others. Who the two are has never been satisfactorily explained. They do not answer, they are not named, they have no part in the rest of the poem. Explanations have been offered for a thousand years: that the desert convention was to travel in threes, that they are the poet's own eyes, that the dual is a grammatical archaism the poets kept because their predecessors used it. None has settled the matter, and the two silent companions are still there at the start of the poems.
