An anecdote is, literally, something not given out. The Greek anekdota means unpublished, and it became a word because Procopius — the official historian of Justinian's wars — also wrote a second book that he did not circulate, full of accusations about the emperor, the empress and the general he had served under. It surfaced centuries later in the Vatican library under the title Anekdota, and is usually called the Secret History. The word traveled from that title to mean any unpublished item, then any private story about a public figure, then any short story at all. Whether Procopius meant a word of it is argued; the two books contradict each other so completely that somebody has to be lying, and he wrote them both.
