Andrena could be built on a man's name or lengthened from a shorter woman's one, and the record does not say. It is also, exactly as spelled, the scientific name of a very large group of bees that almost nobody notices.

Where it comes from

Our story of Andrena

Most people think of bees as living in hives, and most bees do not. The genus spelled exactly like this name contains well over a thousand species of mining bees, and each female digs her own burrow in bare ground, provisions a few cells with pollen, lays an egg in each and seals them up. There is no colony, no queen and no honey. They are often the first bees out in spring, they are frequently the most important pollinators of early fruit trees, and because they nest in the soil they are wiped out by paving and heavy cultivation in a way hive bees are not. A lawn with thin patches and a south-facing bank can hold hundreds of nests, each with one female, and the people living there will assume the small holes are ants.

Meaningnot established

Not established

Two routes are available and neither is documented. As a feminine of Andrew it inherits the Greek word for a man; as a lengthening of Andrea it inherits the same thing at one more remove. The identical bee genus was named from a Greek word and is a separate borrowing, not a source.

Andrena sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1992, with 21 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Andrena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Three short forms come out of it and none sounds like the others.
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the most comfortable rhythm English has.
  • It is genuinely rare while being built from familiar pieces.
What to consider
  • Andrina, Andreana and Adrena are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • Stress placement is unsettled, so strangers will say it two ways.
  • Which parent name it came from is not recorded, so the meaning has two possible routes.
