Ananda is Sanskrit for joy or bliss, and in India it is a man's name. It belonged to the Buddha's cousin, who became his attendant for the last twenty-five years of his life, and who is the reason the Buddhist scriptures exist in the form they do. Every discourse opens with the same four words because he was the one reciting them from memory.

Where it comes from
From A Sanskrit word for bliss to Ananda
The story of Ananda
When the Buddha died, the community faced an immediate problem: everything he had taught existed only in the memories of people who had heard it. A council was called, and the task of reciting the discourses fell to Ananda, who had been present for most of them and was known for total recall. He recited; the assembly checked him; what he said became the canon. That is why every sutta begins with the words thus have I heard, which is Ananda telling you the provenance of what follows before he tells you anything else. He is also the one who kept pressing the question of whether women could be admitted to the order, and who is generally credited with the fact that they were. For a figure remembered mainly as an attendant, that is a considerable amount of consequence.
Meaning
bliss, joy
The Sanskrit word means bliss or complete happiness, and it is one of the most heavily used elements in Indian religious naming, appearing at the end of hundreds of monastic names. The meaning is not disputed anywhere. What is worth knowing is that the word is grammatically masculine and the name is a man's name across South Asia, which is not how it is read in America.
How the name formed

Fashion outlook
Ananda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It has a documented meaning in a living language and one of the clearest ones any name can carry.

- It carries a genuinely remarkable historical figure, and the story can be told in two sentences.
- It is a man's name across South Asia, and your child will meet that fact whenever the name travels.
- The stress is unsettled between the American and the Sanskrit reading.
- It will be heard as Amanda by people who are not listening carefully.
