Where it comes from

The story of Amye

Amethystos means not drunk. The Greeks believed the purple stone prevented intoxication, and drinking cups were made of it or set with it; the Romans carried on the practice, and one story explains the color by having wine spilled over a white stone. The belief is usually assumed to rest on the resemblance between the stone's color and diluted wine — a cup that looks full of wine while holding water is a useful thing at a symposium. The gem is a variety of quartz colored by iron and irradiation, and heating it turns it yellow, which is how most citrine on the market is made. The word is still in the stone's mineral name, so a sober intention is embedded in the vocabulary of jewelry.

Meaning

beloved

From the Old French past participle of the verb to love, so the name says loved rather than loving. It came into English after the Conquest and has been in continuous use since, with the spelling moving about a good deal.

Fashion outlook

Amye sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • Two syllables with front stress is the plainest shape English has.
  • The meaning is documented and unambiguous.
What to consider
  • Amy, Aimee and Ami are all commoner and will be written for it.
  • The final letter is silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • It looks like a modern respelling to readers who do not know the old form.
