Where it comes from

The story of Amiee

Medieval English records hold a separate name that fed the same result. Amice, or Amicia in its Latin dress, was reasonably common in England after the Conquest and comes from the word for a friend rather than the word for beloved; it survived into the seventeenth century and then disappeared. Amy could descend from either, and the two were being written interchangeably by clerks who had no reason to care. The name that reached the modern age is the merger, which is why the meaning is offered so confidently and rests on so little.

The French name is generally read this way. A second medieval name lies behind the English form as well, and the two have been mixed for so long that no single reading covers both.

Fashion outlook

Amiee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is short, soft and completely easy on first hearing.
  • Amy sits inside it as an entirely standard everyday form.
  • The meaning is warm and needs no explaining.
What to consider
  • Aimee and Amy are both commoner and this gets corrected constantly.
  • The spelling looks like an error to anybody who knows the French.
  • It is closely tied to the decades of its use.
