Where it comes from

The story of Ambra

Rub a piece of amber on cloth and it picks up dust and straw. The Greeks noticed this, and their word for amber was elektron — so when European scientists needed a word for the force they were investigating two thousand years later, they built it from the Greek name of the stone that had first demonstrated it. Electricity, electron, electronic: all of them are, at the root, the word amber. The material itself had an older kind of importance. Baltic amber was carried south to the Mediterranean along established routes centuries before Rome amounted to anything, and pieces of northern resin turn up in Mycenaean graves — one of the first long-distance trades in European history, for a substance whose only use was that it was beautiful.

Meaning

Amber

The Italian noun, taken directly. Amber is fossilized tree resin, warm to the touch, light enough to float in salt water, and often carrying insects that were trapped in it before there were people to look at them. The name means the substance and nothing more.

Fashion outlook

Ambra sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The meaning is concrete, warm and immediately understood in several languages.
  • It is a word name whose word is a physical object rather than an abstraction.
  • It is rare in America while being an ordinary name in Italy.
What to consider
  • Americans will hear Amber and write it.
  • The consonant cluster in the middle is easy to say and looks harder than it is.
  • The obvious shortening is a word she will not want, which limits the options.
