Two Alvins are genuinely famous in America and neither of them is quite a person. One is a dance company. The other is a small white submarine that has been diving since the 1960s — it recovered a lost hydrogen bomb off the coast of Spain, carried the first human beings down to the hot vents on the ocean floor, and went to look at the Titanic. It is named for Allyn Vine, the Woods Hole oceanographer who spent years arguing that such a vessel should exist, with his two names run together into one.

The story of Alvin
Alvin Ailey grew up in a small town in Texas, in a Baptist church and at the edge of a river where baptisms were held, and he built a dance company in New York at the end of the 1950s at a time when Black dancers were largely shut out of the concert stage. Revelations, which he made in 1960 to the spirituals he had heard as a child, has been performed more than any other work of modern dance anywhere in the world. He did not intend it as his monument and spent years slightly irritated that audiences wanted nothing else. The company still closes with it, and audiences still stand up.

elf-friend, or noble friend
Alvin is what is left after several Old English names with different first elements wore down into the same modern shape. One of them meant elf-friend, another noble friend, and by the time anyone was writing them consistently they had stopped being distinguishable. The name went quiet in England after the Norman period, survived as a surname, and came back as a first name in the nineteenth century, when a great many old English names were dug up and put back into service.

The Cecil test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Alvin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Cecil climbed just as high around 1902, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Cecil's path sketches the road Alvin is walking now.
Alvin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is completely familiar and completely unmistakable — nobody has ever had to spell it twice for the same person.
- Al is one of the most useful short forms in English, and it fits a boy, a teenager and a man in a suit.
- The name has serious carriers in dance, in war and on the ocean floor, and none of them dominates it.
- A cartoon chipmunk has owned the name for American children since the late 1950s, and that will be the first association for a great many people.
- It reads as a grandfather's name at the moment, though names of exactly this vintage are the ones that come back.
- It is currently stepping back rather than rising, so it will feel older than the children around him for a while yet.
