Where it comes from

Our story of Alverda

The eighteen-eighties and nineties were the first great American period of invented women's names, sixty years before the one everybody remembers. Families in the rural South and Midwest produced Ocie, Arleigh, Ivery, Orpha, Verda, Elzie and hundreds like them — some built from a father's name, some from a hymn, some apparently from nothing at all — and the great majority appear in the record for one decade and vanish. Nothing about that process was different from what happened a century later except the syllables in fashion. The idea that made names are a modern phenomenon is simply wrong, and this name is one of several thousand pieces of evidence.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source. The front resembles Alva, a name in use at the time, and the ending resembles the Spanish word for green, which has nothing to do with it and was almost certainly not in the mind of anybody involved. The name appears to have been assembled from pleasant sounds.

Fashion outlook

Alverda sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is genuinely rare and has the solid sound of a period name.
  • It is read correctly on sight with no difficulty.
  • It shortens to a name that stood on its own a century ago.
What to consider
  • It will be heard as Alberta, Elvira or Alvina, which are all nearby.
  • The name belongs entirely to one American era.
  • There is no meaning to hand a child, and the Spanish word it resembles is a coincidence.
