The story of Altagracia
The painting is small, on cloth, and it shows the nativity; tradition says it was brought from Spain by two brothers in the early sixteenth century and left at a house in Higüey. It has been in the town ever since, and a very large modern basilica was built around it in the middle of the last century, with a vast arch over the sanctuary. The pilgrimage on her feast day in January brings people from across the island and from the diaspora. Spanish-speaking naming practice treats titles of the Virgin as available names in their own right, which is why the record holds Altagracia, Guadalupe, Soledad, Consuelo and Mercedes, all of them describing her rather than naming her.
Meaning
high grace
The two Spanish words are transparent and the reading is not in doubt. The name is a Marian title used as a personal name, which Spanish does with a great many titles.

Fashion outlook
Altagracia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The meaning is transparent to any Spanish speaker and easy to explain to anyone else.
- It carries several established short forms, so the full name never has to be said in a hurry.
- It is immediately legible to a very large community and genuinely rare outside it.
- Five syllables is a lot for an American form, and it will be truncated by databases and by people alike.
- It is a strongly religious name, which is a feature for many families and a consideration for others.
- Outside Dominican and Spanish-speaking communities it will be spelled aloud constantly.
