Our story of Aloma
The South Seas were a genre before they were a place, as far as American audiences were concerned. A stream of plays, novels and films through the nineteen-twenties and thirties invented an entire imaginary Pacific — sarongs, lagoons, volcanic eruptions, and names that sounded right without being anything — and the names went into the record as the shows ran. This is one of them. It is worth being clear about what it is and is not: a genuine invention with a documented date and author, and not a Hawaiian or Samoan word, whatever any name site says. Parents who used it were naming daughters after a character, which is an ordinary and honest reason.
Meaningnot established
Not established
The name was made up for a work of fiction and means nothing. It is not the Hawaiian greeting it resembles, which is a different word with a different vowel and a real meaning; the playwright appears to have been reaching for that sound without using it.

Fashion outlook
Aloma sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is soft, balanced and easy for anyone to say.
- It is genuinely rare and has a documented origin.
- The spelling is read correctly on sight.
- It will be assumed to be Hawaiian, which it is not.
- The play and the film it came from are long forgotten.
- There is no meaning at all behind it.
