Almeta
Feminine
Almeta and Almeda are the same name, and the reason both spellings exist is a fact about American mouths rather than about American families. In the middle of a word, between two vowels, English as spoken in the United States does not keep a t and a d apart. The letters differ; the sound does not.

The story of Almeta
An alameda in Spanish is a walk lined with poplars, from álamo, the word for the tree. The word traveled with Spanish settlement across the southwest and stuck to streets, plazas and eventually counties, so that a great many Americans use it daily without knowing it names a tree. The same tree is behind a rather more famous building: the mission in San Antonio that everyone knows by a nickname was called after the cottonwoods that grew beside it. A name reaching English by that road arrives with a landscape attached to it, even when nobody involved could have said what the word meant.

possibly from the Spanish for a poplar grove
The likeliest source is alameda, which reached American English as a place word. An independent formation on Alma with an ending is also possible. The record does not settle it and the two spellings do not help.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The t in the middle is not a full t in most American speech; it is the same quick tap that sits inside water and ladder alike.

Fashion outlook
Almeta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The rhythm is even and the name carries well at its length.
- Meta sits inside it as an unexpected and quite distinct short form.
- It is rare enough that a child will not meet another.
- Almeda is equally standard and the two will be confused permanently.
- The origin is not settled, so no meaning can be given with confidence.
- The generation that used it is now very old.
