Our story of Almedia runs through the hills of Arkansas. Its near twin Almeda was the name of Almeda Riddle, an Ozark singer who carried a great store of old ballads in her memory, learned from her family and neighbors, and sang them for the folklorist Alan Lomax when he came through recording the songs of the South. Almedia is the same name with one more syllable, from the same world of American girls' names that sounded like places. Across the ocean, Almeida is a star-shaped fortress town on Portugal's border with Spain. Nothing ties the American names to it, but they share its letters, and its walls make a fine picture to set beside them.
