Where it comes from

The story of Allysia

Alicia Alonso of Havana lost most of her sight to detached retinas as a young woman, and went on dancing Giselle and other great roles for decades, guided by lights at the edge of the stage and partners who placed themselves exactly where she expected; she founded the Ballet Nacional de Cuba. In London, Lilian Alicia Marks joined Diaghilev's Ballets Russes at fourteen, and he renamed her Alicia Markova because his company was supposed to sound Russian; she became the first great English ballerina. Allysia is one of the spellings of Alicia used by American families in the late twentieth century.
