Where it comes from

The story of Allysen

Alison was a common name in medieval England and Scotland, and Chaucer gave it to the Wife of Bath and to the young wife in The Miller's Tale. It also became a surname, taken in Scotland for the sons of Allan and in England more often for the sons of Alice. When the surname came back as a girl's first name, spellings multiplied. The -sen ending borrows the Scandinavian way of writing son, as in Hansen and Jensen, and gives an English name a northern look.

Meaningscholars disagree

little Alice, from a Germanic word for noble

As a first name, Alison is Alice with the Old French diminutive -on, and Alice goes back to Adalheidis, noble kind. As a surname, Allison was read as son of Alice in England and son of Allan in Scotland. The -sen spelling follows neither; it is a modern respelling.

Fashion outlook

Allysen sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It sounds exactly like a long-established name with a documented history.
  • Ally is a ready short form.
  • The spelling is distinctive without being hard to say.
What to consider
  • Almost everyone will write Allison, and she will spell it out often.
  • The -sen ending looks like a Scandinavian surname, so some will assume a family connection that is not there.
