Where it comes from

Our story of Allyse

The story was improvised on a rowing trip up the Thames on a summer afternoon, to entertain three sisters, and the middle one asked for it to be written out. He wrote it by hand, illustrated it himself, and gave it to her as a Christmas present about two years later. A friend saw the manuscript, told him to publish, and the book has never been out of print since. The handwritten original is in the British Library. It is a rare case where the moment of origin is documented precisely, including the date and the weather, which meteorological records later suggested was not as fine as everybody remembered.

Allyse sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1988, with 56 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Allyse sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ally comes off the front as a short form and is thoroughly established.
  • The stress is usually unmistakable, so first attempts land correctly.
  • It is short on paper and quick to write.
What to consider
  • Two readings are in circulation and the spelling chooses neither.
  • Alyse, Elise and Alice are all in the record and will be confused with it.
  • No reason for the spelling is documented, so there is nothing to say when someone asks why.
