Where it comes from

The story of Alixandria

Alexander founded Alexandria in Egypt, and in the twentieth century it found its poet in Constantine Cavafy, a clerk in the city's irrigation office who wrote The City and The God Abandons Antony and made Alexandria the setting of modern Greek poetry. The Alexandria on the Potomac, where George Washington kept a town house and went to church, was named not for the Macedonian king but for the Alexanders, a Scottish family who had owned the land. Alixandria takes the city's name and spells it with an i.

Fashion outlook

Alixandria sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It connects to a famous city and a clear Greek meaning.
  • Alix, Andria and Lexi give several short forms.
  • It is rare as a spelling.
What to consider
  • People will write Alexandria, and the i will need spelling out.
  • It is long, and forms and screens will sometimes cut it short.
