Our story of Alinda
Alinda was the name of a hilltop city in Caria, in what is now southwestern Turkey. When Queen Ada of Caria was pushed out of power by her own brother, she held on to the fortress of Alinda, and in 334 BC, when Alexander the Great marched through, she surrendered it to him and adopted him as her son; he gave her back her kingdom. The American name almost certainly came from Linda and Belinda rather than from the ancient city. But it shares a sound with a place where a queen kept her ground.
