Alexzandra writes one consonant twice. The x in this name already says ks, and the z that has been inserted after it says the second half of that again, so the spelling contains a k, an s and a z where the name has two sounds. It is the most redundant respelling in a family famous for them.

Where it comes from

The story of Alexzandra

The name belonged to somebody else before it belonged to the conqueror's family. In the oldest Greek sources it is an alternative name for the Trojan princess who saw the future and was not believed, and a long and famously difficult Hellenistic poem is called by it: more than fourteen hundred lines of prophecy, delivered by her, in language so obscure that ancient readers needed commentaries. The poem survived precisely because it was hard — it was taught as an exercise — and it is the reason the two names have been paired since antiquity. Anybody reading a classical text who meets this name has to check which woman is meant.

Meaning

defender of men

Two Greek elements, one about warding off and one meaning a man, and the reading is settled. The feminine has been in use as long as the masculine. The inserted z changes nothing about the meaning and only lengthens a spelling that was already among the longest in ordinary use.

How the name formed

  1. A Greek compound about defending men
  2. An alternative name for a Trojan prophetess
  3. A royal name across Europe and Russia
  4. Alexzandra with a z added to an x

Four syllables with the stress on the third. The x is already carrying two consonants; the z after it is silent in the sense that it adds nothing, since the sound it writes has just been written.

Fashion outlook

Alexzandra sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Alex, Sandra and Zandra are three complete names from one certificate.
  • The sound is understood in every European language.
  • The meaning is specific, ancient and easy to explain.
What to consider
  • Alexandra is the standard spelling and this will be corrected into it constantly.
  • Ten letters and a redundant one is a long spelling-out on the telephone.
  • The z will be read by some as marking a different pronunciation, which it does not.
