The story of Alexsa
The Greek verb alexein, 'to ward off', sits inside Alexander and Alexandra, and it also gave early modern English medicine the word alexipharmic, a remedy that wards off poison. Alexa grew up as a short form of Alexandra and became a name of its own in the late twentieth century, and Alexsa is one of its spellings. In 2014 Amazon launched its voice assistant under the name Alexa, and families who chose the name, or something close to it, found their daughters sharing it with a device that answers to it; the name has since fallen sharply from favor.
