Where it comes from

The story of Alexiss

In Greek, Alexis was a man's name, and Latin poets kept it so: Virgil, writing in the first century BC, opens his second Eclogue with Corydon burning for the beautiful Alexis, who will not return his love. The name stayed masculine in Europe for centuries, in the French Alexis and the Russian Aleksei, and then crossed to girls in the United States in the late twentieth century, where daughters came to outnumber sons. Alexiss belongs to that American chapter, the name as girls know it with its final letter doubled, and nothing records who first wrote it this way.

Meaning

Alexiss sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 42 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Fashion outlook

Alexiss sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Sounds exactly like Alexis, so it is understood the first time it is spoken.
  • Comes with ready short forms in Lexi, Alex and Lex.
  • The root has a settled Greek meaning and a record that runs back to classical poetry.
What to consider
  • The second s will be dropped on forms and flagged by spellcheck, and many people will assume it is a typo. The name will need spelling aloud for life.
  • The spelling is given to a few boys as well, but nearly every Alexiss is a girl; a boy with it will usually be taken for a girl on paper.
  • Because the sound is identical to Alexis, the name will be heard as familiar even though this spelling is rare.
