This name has been round a loop. Alice went into Latin as Alicia, came back into English with a c doing two jobs at once, was respelled phonetically as Alisha, and has now been respelled again to fix the vowel — four stages, and the result is Alice written the way an English speaker would spell it if nobody had ever written it before.

How old is the name Aleesha?

Aleesha first appears in US birth records in 1970 — 55 years ago. The typical Aleesha alive today was born around 1995, making them about 30 years old. About 1,900 people named Aleesha are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Aleesha most popular?

Where it comes from

The story of Aleesha

The doubled e and the sh between them remove every ambiguity that the Latin spelling creates. In Alicia the c is doing two things at once — it has to be read as a sh and it has to carry the vowel before it — and English gives no rule that settles either, which is why that spelling has half a dozen pronunciations in circulation. Writing the sound out with the letters English actually uses for it produces a form that can only be read one way. It looks like a modern invention and it is in fact a correction.

Meaning

of a noble kind

The Germanic compound behind Alice, arriving here after a Latinization and two respellings. The sense survives the journey; almost nothing else does.

Aleesha sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1992, with 90 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Aleesha sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling is unambiguous where every earlier form of it is not.
  • Ali sits inside it as a short form that is entirely current.
  • The rhythm is even and the name is easy at speed.
What to consider
  • Alicia and Alisha are both commoner and this gets corrected constantly.
  • It looks invented and is in fact the most phonetically honest of the set.
  • It is closely tied to the decades of its use.
