Our story of Aleene
Before brewing was a trade it was housework. Ale was safer than water, it did not keep, and every household needed it, so it was made at home by women, and the surplus was sold. A woman who brewed for sale was an alewife or a brewster, and the -ster ending is itself the old feminine of -er, which is why the surname Brewster exists alongside Brewer. Medieval English towns regulated them closely, with ale-tasters appointed to check quality, and court rolls are full of alewives being fined. Then hops arrived, beer kept longer, brewing became capital-intensive and moved into guilds, and within a couple of centuries it was a man's trade with a man's name. The word alewife survives mainly as the name of a fish. Aleene is not connected to any of this, but the syllable has a history worth having.

Fashion outlook
Aleene sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The stress is unmistakable, so almost nobody mispronounces it on first sight.
- It is short, soft and easy to say, with no difficult consonants anywhere in it.
- It is rare on paper while being made entirely of familiar sounds.
- Aline, Arlene and Alene are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you often.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has nothing settled to answer with.
- It reads as a name of an older American generation, which is either the appeal or the obstacle.
Nobody names a baby alone.
