Aleena is one of those spellings where several old names meet: the Alina carried across Poland, Russia and Germany, and the Aleena written and spoken in Arabic and Urdu. It moves in three easy beats, with the long middle vowel doing the work, and it holds together in almost any language a family brings to it.

How old is the name Aleena?

Aleena first appears in US birth records in 1969 — 56 years ago. The typical Aleena is a kid of about 11 — this name's wave is very recent. About 12,500 people named Aleena are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Aleena most popular?

Aleena peaked in 2015, reaching #463 nationally. Today it ranks #657, 194 places below that high. See the whole 2015 chart.

Where it comes from

The story of Aleena

The name arrives in American records by more than one road, which is the interesting thing about it. Alina and Alena have been in steady use across Central and Eastern Europe for centuries, shortened from longer names and eventually standing alone; Aleena is the spelling that renders those sounds most plainly for an English reader. Independently, Aleena is well established as a girl's name in Arabic- and Urdu-speaking families, and traveled with them. Its strongest footing in the US sits in California, Texas and New York, the states where those communities are largest.

Meaningscholars disagree

Most often read as "noble" through Alina, or glossed "silk, soft" in Urdu usage

Two serious roads lead to this spelling. Through Alina it goes back to Germanic Adelheid and its Latinized offshoot Adelina, from elements meaning "noble" — the same route that gives Adeline and Alena. In Arabic and Urdu usage, Aleena is commonly explained as "silk" or "soft," a reading widespread in South Asian naming practice though less firmly traced in older sources. A third strand exists too: in Czech, Slovak and Russian, Alena works as a short form of Magdalena and Helena, which pulls the meaning elsewhere again.

Stress falls on the middle syllable. Families with Arabic or Urdu roots often open it more fully as ah-LEE-nah; both are in ordinary use for the same spelling.

#350
counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Aleena went to 436 girls in 2025, but Alena, Alenna and Aleenah and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 6 spellings went to 878, which makes it the 350th most-given girls’ name of the year — 307 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 1,831 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 3,686 for Aleena itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Spelled the way it sounds in English — the double e removes the ambiguity that Alina and Alena leave open.
  • Has real short forms already in circulation: Lena, Allie, Leena, each a name people already know.
  • Works across Slavic, Germanic, Arabic and Urdu naming traditions without needing to be adapted.
  • Familiar enough that no one will ask you to repeat it, uncommon enough that a class rarely holds two.
What to consider
  • The near-neighbors are many: Alina, Alena, Elena, Aliyah, Adeline. Expect the spelling to be confirmed at doctors' offices and on class lists for life, and expect the occasional Alina to come back on paperwork.
  • The meaning depends on which tradition you name it from. If a specific reading matters to your family, it's worth deciding now which story you'll tell, since both are genuinely in play.
  • Its American record is recent rather than deep, so it reads as a name of the present moment rather than an inherited one — which cuts both ways depending on what you want.
