Aleecia writes a name as it sounds and, in doing so, loses the letter that was doing two jobs at once. The English word its middle spells covers a doctor and a bloodsucking worm, and English has never been sure which came first.

How old is the name Aleecia?

Aleecia first appears in US birth records in 1969 — 56 years ago. The typical Aleecia alive today was born around 2004, making them about 21 years old. About 700 people named Aleecia are estimated to be alive in the US today.

When was the name Aleecia most popular?

Where it comes from

The story of Aleecia

Old English had a word, læce, that meant a physician, and the same word means the worm. Which sense came first has never been settled. One account says the animal is named after the doctor, because doctors used them; the other says the doctor is named after the animal, on the reasoning that bloodletting was what he did. The medical sense was the ordinary English word for centuries — a leechbook was a medical text, and there are Anglo-Saxon ones that survive — and it died out only as Latin and French medical vocabulary took over. The worm sense survived because the practice did: medicinal leeches were used in enormous numbers into the nineteenth century, nearly driving the species to extinction in Europe, and they are farmed and used in reconstructive surgery today.

Meaning

noble kind

From a Germanic compound meaning noble and kind, worn down by French. In the standard spelling the c carries the sh sound and links the name to its Latin form at once; spelling the sound out with a double e removes both.

How the name formed

  1. Adalheidis
  2. Alice
  3. Alicia
  4. Aleecia

Pronouncing Aleecia

uh-LEE-shuh

Three syllables with the stress in the middle. The double e fixes the vowel that the standard spelling leaves open, which is the one thing this version genuinely settles.

Aleecia sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2007, with 37 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Aleecia sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The spelling removes the pronunciation ambiguity that the standard one has.
  • Ali comes off it at once and needs no explanation.
  • Middle stress on three syllables is the most comfortable rhythm English offers.
What to consider
  • Alicia, Alesha and Aleisha are all recorded and will be written for it.
  • The spelling has to be given aloud every time.
  • It loses the link to the standard form that the c was carrying.
