Where it comes from

Our story of Aleece

Alice Springs is named after a woman who never saw it. When the Overland Telegraph Line was pushed through the center of Australia, a repeater station was built beside a waterhole in the MacDonnell Ranges, and the surveyor named the waterhole after Alice Todd, wife of the superintendent of telegraphs in South Australia — the Todd River beside it carries his name. The station was the point where messages from Adelaide were relayed north toward Darwin and the undersea cable to Java, which is how Australia was first connected to the rest of the world. The settlement that grew there was officially called Stuart for decades, and the name of the waterhole eventually won.

It may respell Alice, which descends through French from a Germanic name about nobility, or it may be an independent build on a free front and a common ending. The record holds the spelling and nothing else.

Aleece sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1986, with 33 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Aleece sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Back stress gives a two-syllable name a firm landing.
  • The sound is entirely familiar, so nobody has to be taught it.
  • Both halves detach as short forms.
What to consider
  • Alice, Alyce and Elise will all be written for it.
  • The change is inaudible, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
  • Nothing records whether it respells a name or was built from parts.

Nobody names a baby alone.
