Alean
Feminine
Alean belongs to a generation of American women's names that exist in the record and almost nowhere else — not in name dictionaries, not in church registers abroad, not in any tradition that can be pointed at. It ran in the South and lower Midwest in the first two decades of the last century and then stopped. What it mostly demonstrates is how little of that era's naming was ever written down by anyone who cared about spelling.

The story of Alean
When Alean was being given, the United States had no national record of births at all. The federal birth registration area began in 1915 with ten states and did not cover the whole country until 1933, so for the first women who carried this name there was often no certificate, or one filed years later. Much of what is known about their names comes instead from Social Security applications, filled in by adults decades afterwards, writing their own names the way they had come to write them. That means a spelling like Alean might be a midwife's, a clerk's, a family's, or a woman's own later choice — and the record has no way to tell those four apart.

The obvious candidates are Aileen and its cousin Alene, both of which were in use at the time; Arlean and Earlean, which were common in exactly the same places; and a straightforward joining of Ala or Ada to a fashionable ending. Every one of these is possible and none can be shown. The ending itself was doing heavy work in those decades — it produced Charlene, Darlene, Arlene and a dozen more — but Alean is early enough that it may predate the fashion rather than follow it.

Fashion outlook
Alean sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is soft, short and completely pronounceable, and it sounds like a name rather than an invention.
- It has a real place in American family history without belonging to any famous person.
- Lena and Allie are both waiting inside it, and both are in current use.
- There is no meaning and no origin to give her, and the honest answer to a curious child is that nobody knows.
- It will be written Aileen, Arlene and Alene by almost everyone who hears it.
- The name is firmly dated to the early twentieth century and has had no revival at all.
