Our story of Aldine
Aldus Manutius set up a press in Venice at the end of the fifteenth century with a straightforward and immodest plan: to print the Greek and Latin classics accurately, and to print them small enough to carry. Books until then were furniture. His were octavos, the size of a hand, priced for a scholar rather than a cathedral, and to fit more words on a small page he commissioned a new compressed sloping typeface modeled on the handwriting of Italian chanceries. That face is why the word italic exists. The same house is generally credited with introducing the semicolon. A pocket book, a slanted letter and a piece of punctuation, all out of one workshop, and the adjective made from the printer's name still means a book from that press.
Meaningnot established
Not established
Aldine is the adjective from the Venetian printer Aldus, and it may have been taken up as a name from there. It may equally be a name built on the Germanic Alda with a common ending attached. The record holds the name for boys and girls alike and says nothing about either possibility.
Pronouncing Aldine
AL-dine
Two syllables with the stress in front and the ending rhyming with wine. al-DEEN is also heard, and the spelling does not settle it.

Fashion outlook
Aldine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, spelled as it sounds, and easy to write after hearing it once.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it leaves a question open rather than closing it.
- It carries a genuine piece of history that a child can go and look at in any library.
- Most children with this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys; either may be taken for the other.
- Two pronunciations are in use and the spelling settles neither, so the name gets checked back with you.
- No origin is documented for the personal name, so the meaning question has two possible answers and no settled one.
