Albertine has a whole volume of a novel to itself, and then most of another. Proust gave the name to the figure his narrator loves, imprisons, loses and then spends hundreds of pages failing to understand, and two of the seven parts of the work are named for her directly. Few names carry that much fiction.

How old is the name Albertine?

Albertine was already in use when US birth records began in 1880 — it is at least 145 years old. The typical Albertine alive today was born around 1922, making them about 103 years old. About 400 people named Albertine are estimated to be alive in the US today.

Where it comes from

The story of Albertine

The Proust connection is the famous one and it is not comfortable: the character is described almost entirely through the jealousy of the man watching her, and the book is more honest about that than most readers expect. There is a gentler namesake. A rambling rose bred in France just after the First World War carries the name and is one of the most planted climbing roses in the world — vigorous, coppery-pink, ferociously thorny, and scented enough to be recommended for walls near windows. It flowers once, spectacularly, and then does nothing for the rest of the year, which is either a poor advertisement or an extremely apt one depending on how the novel is read.

Albertine sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1918, with 69 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Albertine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Both elements of the meaning are transparent once pointed out.
  • It offers short forms from either end with completely different characters.
  • It is genuinely uncommon while containing no difficult sound.
What to consider
  • It is long and the spelling will need giving letter by letter.
  • Albertina is equally standard and will be substituted.
  • The generation that used it in America is now very old.
