Alayne
Feminine · “a feminine of Alan”
Alayne arrives in the American record at the end of the 1920s, which is a specific enough moment to be worth investigating, and the investigation leads to a Canadian novel that was, for about twenty years, one of the most widely read things in English. The heroine's name is Alayne Archer, and the timing is very hard to explain any other way.

The story of Alayne
Mazo de la Roche won the Atlantic Monthly's ten thousand dollar novel prize in 1927 with Jalna, a book about a large and quarrelsome Ontario family, and then wrote fifteen more about the same household. The books sold in the millions on both sides of the Atlantic, were made into a Hollywood film in the middle 1930s and a stage play, and were read by people who had never read another Canadian novel. Alayne Archer is the outsider who marries into the family and spends sixteen volumes not quite belonging. The name entered American records within two years of the first book and peaked while the series was at its height.
Meaningscholars disagree
a feminine of Alan, or a respelling of Elaine
Both routes are open and neither is closed. Alan is a Breton name brought to England at the Conquest whose meaning has never been settled; Elaine is the Old French form of Helen, whose meaning has not been settled either. So Alayne descends from one of two names, each of which is itself unexplained, which is an unusual amount of uncertainty for a name that looks as tidy as this one does. What can be said about the spelling is that it writes a single vowel sound twice and then adds a final e that does nothing at all.
How the name formed
- Alan brought to England from Brittany at the Conquest
- Elaine arrives in English through French romance
- the two blur into a single set of respellings
- a Canadian novel gives the spelling a heroine in 1927
- peaks in the middle 1930s and fades

Fashion outlook
Alayne sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is soft, short and immediately readable despite being genuinely rare.
- Lane and Allie are both available and both sound current rather than dated.
- It has a real literary source, which very few names of its decade can claim.
- Elaine and Alaine are both commoner and will be substituted regularly.
- The final e invites a third syllable from readers who have not met the name.
- Neither of its two possible parent names has a meaning anybody can give her.
