The story of Aimie
Aimee Semple McPherson built the Angelus Temple in Los Angeles and preached to thousands on radio, and then one day she walked into the sea at Venice Beach and vanished. A month later she walked out of the Mexican desert, saying she had been kidnapped, and the investigation that followed filled the newspapers for months. Her name, the French Aimée, gave America its own forms, Amy, Aimee and Aimie, the last written with the -ie of English pet names.
