Our story of Aidee
Byron gave the name Haidée to a character in Don Juan: a girl on a Greek island who finds the shipwrecked hero on the beach, hides him, and is eventually separated from him by her pirate father. The episode is the most tender writing in a long and mostly satirical poem, and it was widely read. The name was picked up in French, then in Spanish, where it became Haydée and then Aidé and Aidee, and it spread through Latin America over the following century entirely detached from the poem. A great many people carry it. Almost none of them have read the thing it came from, which is the ordinary fate of a name a writer invents.

Not established
The name was coined for a poem and has no etymology to recover, though the poet seems to have built it from a Greek word. This spelling is a Spanish rendering of the sound and is not documented directly.

Fashion outlook
Aidee sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- It is short, soft and made of sounds that English and Spanish share.
- It is thoroughly established in Latin America and genuinely rare in English-speaking settings.
- It has a documented literary origin, which most short names cannot claim.
- English readers will guess the pronunciation wrong on first sight, and the correction becomes routine.
- Haydee, Aide and Aidee are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you.
- A coined name has no meaning to give, which disappoints people who ask.
