Where it comes from

Our story of Aeriel

Shakespeare's Ariel is a spirit bound to a magician on an island, who moves through air and water, sings, raises a storm and spends the whole play negotiating for release. Shakespeare seems to have taken the name from the Hebrew, where it belongs to a place and to a figure in a list of names, and the association with air appears to be his own invention, prompted by the sound. The English word aerial comes from a completely different direction, through Latin from the Greek for air, and arrived in English independently. So the airiness of the name is a pun a playwright made, which then became the main thing everybody knows about it. This spelling makes the pun visible.

Meaningnot established

Not established

The name Ariel is Hebrew and its elements are documented. The word aerial is Greek by way of Latin and is not related to it in any way. This spelling straddles the two and the record does not say which was intended.

Fashion outlook

Aeriel sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Ari comes off the front as a short form and works for a child of either sex.
  • The sound is familiar from both the name and the word, so it is rarely a puzzle.
  • It is visually distinctive while being made of entirely ordinary letters.
What to consider
  • Ariel, Arielle and Aerial are all in the record, so the spelling will be checked back with you constantly.
  • One animated mermaid owns the name for a generation of American children.
  • Two stress patterns are in circulation and the spelling settles neither.
