Adryanna
Feminine · “from Hadria”
Adryanna makes two alterations to a name that has been in European use for two thousand years, and neither of them can be heard: a y replacing an i, and a doubled n where one would do. The name itself belongs to an emperor, and to the only Englishman ever elected pope.

The story of Adryanna
Exactly one Englishman has been elected pope, and he took this name. Nicholas Breakspear was born near St Albans to a family of no importance — his father ended up a monk at the abbey there — and he left England young, apparently after being turned down for admission to that same abbey. He got his education in southern France, rose through a house of canons near Avignon, was sent north as a legate to reorganise the church in Scandinavia, and did it well enough to be elected on his return. His reign was four years of continuous conflict with a Roman commune that had thrown the papacy out of the city and with an emperor who objected to being described as holding his crown as a favor. He is the only pope in the list whose native language was English, and the abbey that would not have him now has a window with his face in it.

Fashion outlook
Adryanna sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The underlying name is understood across Europe and the Americas without translation.
- Four syllables give three quite different short forms.
- The meaning is documented and simple: a place, and a person from it.
- Adriana and Adrianna are both far commoner and will be written by default.
- Both alterations are silent, so the spelling must be given aloud every time.
- Four syllables is long for forms designed around shorter names.
