The story of Adryana
Adrienne Lecouvreur was the great tragic actress of the Comédie-Française, admired by Voltaire, and she died suddenly at thirty-seven amid rumors of poison. Francesco Cilea made her story into the opera Adriana Lecouvreur, in which a rival sends her a bouquet of poisoned violets. The Italian form of her name became a favorite for daughters across Europe and the Americas. Adryana writes it with a y, and nothing more is recorded about the choice.
