The story of Adrienne
The emperor Hadrian made the family name famous, and six popes carried it afterwards, which kept it in European use. French formed Adrienne as the feminine of Adrien, and English-speaking countries borrowed it in the twentieth century when French spellings carried a particular polish. American use rose through the 1960s and peaked in the mid-1980s.
Meaning
of Hadria
From the Latin Hadrianus, 'of Hadria' — a town in northern Italy that also gave the Adriatic its name. The town's own name is probably Etruscan or Illyrian and its meaning is not recovered, so the trail ends in a place rather than a word.
