Adriane
Feminine · “from Hadria”
Adriane is given to both — 6,146 girls and 274 boys since 1880. See other names given to both
Adrian is named for a town that named a sea. Hadria was a settlement in northern Italy, the Adriatic takes its name from it, and the emperor Hadrian's family came from there — so a wall across northern Britain, a sea, and this name all trace back to one small place. Ariadne is a completely different name that everyone confuses with it.

The story of Adriane
Hadrian is remembered in Britain for a wall and in Rome for consolidating an empire that had over-expanded, and his name went into the church through several popes — one of them the only Englishman ever elected. It spread across Europe as Adrian, Adriaan, Adriano and Adrien. The feminine forms came later, and English has produced Adrienne, Adriana and Adriane without ever settling which is standard. This spelling follows the French Adrienne with a single n, which reads as either French or English depending on the reader.
Meaning
from Hadria
Hadrianus means a man from Hadria, and the town gave its name to the Adriatic Sea as well. The emperor's family had come from there generations before, which is how a provincial place name ended up on an emperor and then on a great many popes and saints. The derivation is not disputed. Ariadne, by contrast, is Greek — the Cretan princess of the labyrinth story — and shares nothing with this name but a scramble of the same letters.

Fashion outlook
Adriane sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- The history behind it is unusually concrete: a town, a sea, an emperor and a wall.
- Adri and Ria are both usable short forms and they sound quite different.
- It works for either child, and Adrian has always done so in Europe.
- The stress falls at either end depending on whether the reader treats the name as English or French.
- Adrienne and Adriana are both more common and will be substituted.
- Ariadne is constantly confused with it, and the two have nothing to do with each other.
