Where it comes from

Our story of Adrena

Adrena shares its opening with Adriana and Adrienne, the Adr- of the Roman Hadrianus, and closes on the plain -a of Anna and Rena. By coincidence its letters also spell the start of a word the nineteenth century coined for the body: adrenal, from the Latin ad, 'beside', and renes, 'the kidneys', for the glands that sit on top of them. The name is not built from that word. It simply shares its neat Latin shape, a firm first syllable, a bright middle and an open end.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source records where Adrena comes from. It sounds like a shortened Adriana, the feminine of Adrian, which goes back to the Latin Hadrianus, 'of Hadria'; it also sounds like Rena or Irena with a syllable set in front. The record gives no way to choose between them.

Pronouncing Adrena

Two natural readings: uh-DREE-nuh, rhyming with Rena, or uh-DREN-uh, like the start of adrenal. The family will need to choose one.

Fashion outlook

Adrena sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Short, easy to write, and built from sounds English speakers know from Adrian, Adriana and Rena.
  • Unusual without being hard to read.
  • Takes Addie or Rena as ready short forms.
What to consider
  • The first thing some people will hear in it is adrenaline, and a few will make the joke once. It fades with familiarity.
  • The pronunciation is not fixed, so the name will need saying aloud before people get it right.
  • It has no documented meaning or story of its own; the page can offer only the names it sits beside.
